The Lausanne Airway Course 2023

A common platform for the airway surgeons (otorhinolaryngologists, pediatric surgeons, thoracic surgeons, general surgeons), anesthetists and intensivists.

Conference theme :

"MULTI-DISCIPLINARY CHALLENGES IN THE PEDIATRIC & ADULT COMPROMISED
AIRWAY MANAGEMENT
"

Conference information

The course emphasizes on an AIRWAY TEAM APPROACH and therefore it would be ideal for the entire team (doctors and nurses) involved in managing a compromised airway in adults and children.

Nurses (N) and auxiliary staff (AS) play a critical role in the overall management strategy, and this would be highlighted in this edition.

(Maximum two members (N / AS) per team in presence of the participating doctors(s) can attend the course and the hands-on workshop free of cost, if doctors registration is made in the early bird period).

Surgical Theoretical sessions

The course is designed to get the airway surgeons, pediatric & adult anesthetists, intensivists and nurses together on a common platform to discuss management of airway conditions like congenital airway malformations, intubation injuries, laryngotracheal stenosis in children and adults, complex airway anomalies with tracheotomies and the combined oeso-tracheal lesions.

Anesthesia Theoretical sessions

Various theoretical refreshers will be offered by experts in the field of pediatric and adult airway, invasive or non-invasive ventilation or “how and why to invent new airway equipment”. The last two versions of these theoretical sessions have received extremely positive feedback, due to the up-to-date topics but also thanks to the full dedication and expertise of the airway teachers.

The course format will include:

  • Didactic lectures
  • Endoscopy (live / recorded)
  • Hands-on workshop for Surgeons, Anesthesiologists & Nurses*

(*Nurses and auxiliary staff can attend free of cost only if their doctor is registered for the course and the workshop in the early bird period).

Workshops

Airway reclaiming surgical dissection workshop

In this activity, the participants will be able to practice open airway operations like laryngotracheal reconstruction, cricotracheal resection CTR, extended CTR and slide tracheoplasty on a well-established animal model. They will be given a handout of surgical atlas with step-by-step explanation of the surgical techniques. Experts will perform these operations and then guide the participants through every step of these interventions. Experienced and advanced surgeons will be able to discuss the minute surgical details with the experts and try out themselves during the dissection course.

Airway endoscopy workshop

A systematic airway endoscopy is the basis of the pre-operative assessment and the post-operative management of a compromised airway. Participants will practice rigid and flexible bronchoscopies with foreign body retrieval using conventional bronchoscopy forceps, dormia baskets and fogarty catheter. They will insert airway stents and manage hemoptysis/ airway bleeding.

Nurses and auxiliary staff will be able to understand and discuss various nuances in aero-digestive endoscopy.

Anesthesia Airway Workshop

With the help of anesthetists internationally acknowledged as pediatric and adult airway experts, the participants will be able to train and practice various difficult airway scenario on ultra-realistic high fidelity simulators, mannequins or animal tracheas. With a high ratio of instructors to participants, particular emphasize will be put on the necessary soft skills, in addition to the required technical competences. Workshops will range from basic airway management “tips-and-tricks” through hands-on “ventilation and oxygenation” situations up to “FONA-front-of-neck approaches” according to the existing guidelines. Finally, a full session dedicated to a discussion about the roles of airway recommendations, guidelines and the position of various international anesthesia or airway societies will be available to our participants by authors that are part of such initiatives.

Scientific program

This is currently under construction; though the following topics will be included:

  • The crippled larynx
  • Optimization for airway surgeries
  • Challenging situations in airway surgery
  • Pre- / post op management after LT surgery
  • New devices in anesthesia and FONA (front of neck approaches)
